When Cyclone Winston, one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded in the Pacific, hit Fiji on February 21-22, long time CUFA supporters as well as many new ones joined the appeal to help raise funds for the people of the island nation who suddenly found themselves on the edge of survival.
Your enormous support helped us raise over $10,000 in just days.
Deputy CEO, Rebecca MacFarling said: “The money will go towards assisting and rebuilding village savings and loans groups in the aftermath – helping with compliance and governance, reconstruction of buildings, and aiding financial co-ops which have been destroyed: this is about helping people live sustainable lives.”
Around 2,000 homes were destroyed and thousands more damaged beyond repair. More than 240 schools alone were demolished. Communities were flattened by the strong winds and then deluged by storm surges. Over 350,000 people remain affected and the damage bill has been estimated at $650 million.
CUFA’s Cyclone Winston Appeal funds will assist those living in the most affected areas around the northern parts of Viti Levu, particularly the island of Koro in the Lomaiviti Group and Lau Islands.
